Abstract
Polymerization of three methylpentynes, that is, 4-methyl-1-pentyne, 3-methyl-1-pentyne and 4-methyl-2-pentyne by MCln, MCln·Ph4Sn, or M(CO)6-CCl4-hv (M=Mo, W) provided in high yields polymers, whose molecular weights were around 1×104. While Ziegler-type catalysts could polymerize only prim- and s-alkylacetylenes, Mo- or W-based catalysts proved to polymerize all seven isomers of 1-hexyne, (C6 alkynes) including the methylpentynes. Isomerization did not occur during the polymerization. The color and softening point of the seven polymers were well correlated to the number and branching of side chain. These polymers generally showed low electrical conductivities (∼10−18 ohm−1 cm−1) and unpaired electron densities (≤1016 spin g−1).
