Abstract
Abstract This paper describes the polymerization of p-methoxybenzyl chloride. The polymer formed by heating the monomer, is an acid catalysed condensation process with elimination of HCl. The polymer has a molecular weight ( M n ) in the range 2000–10,000 and is soluble in most common organic solvents. A suggested polymerization mechanism involves the formation of p-methoxybenzyl carbonium ions. Evidence is also presented to suggest that electrophilic attack on the monomer occurs only at the 2-position during polymerization.
