Abstract
Abstract The effect of Fusarenon-X, a mycotoxin isolated from Fusarium nivale and a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis, on the polyribosomal patterns of mouse fibroblasts, L-cells, was analysed using sucrose density gradient. The polyribosomes were rapidly (within 5 min) degraded by treating the cells with 2–3 μg/ml of Fusarenon-X. This effect was partially inhibited by the pretreatment of the cells with cycloheximide, suggesting that the read-out of messenger RNA is necessary for fusarenon-X to act on polyribosomes. Simultaneously, fusarenon-X inhibits [ 3 H]thymidine incorporation by a maximum of 70 % compared to the control.
