Abstract
Abstract The preparation of 19-hydroxyandrost-4-ene-3,17-dione-1- 3 H (83%-β) and estr-4-ene-3,17-dione-1- 3 H (83%-β) from androst-4-ene-3,17-dione,1- 3 H (83%-β) is described. Estr-4-ene-3,17-dione-1- 3 H (83%-β) was converted to estrone using a respiring culture of B. sphaericus (ATCC 7055) with loss of 21% of the tritium, showing that the stereospecific prefernece of the micro-organism's C-1,2-dehydrogenase for C-1α-hydrogen abstraction is the same as for the C-10 methyl analog.
