Abstract
Diaspore (AlOOH) has been proposed as a high pressure product of the reaction of ruby and hydrogen [1]. To improve the accuracy of this calculation the EOS of diaspore has been measured from 0 to 65 GPa using EDXD. A fit of this data to the Birch eqn. gives the parameters B0=170.3±6 GPa, and B’0, and B’0=4.40±0.3. This result does not favor the hydrogen reduction of ruby. It has also been suggested that the OH stretching Raman mode could be used as a signal for the prescence of diaspore at Mbar pressures [2]. Raman spectroscopy on a diaspore suggests that the OH vibron is a poor marker for diaspore due to sensitivity and fluorescence.
