Abstract
When the cervix is ripened with prostaglandin, mechanical dilatation before vacuum aspiration is a much easier process. In addition, the risk of cervical lesions is reduced. Further, prostaglandins have a uterotonic effect that may positively control blood loss by aiding in the complete evacuation of the uterus during aspiration in a 1st trimester abortion. A study of 40 healthy nulliparae in the 1st trimester of pregnancy who were seeking legal abortions were given the pessary 3 hours before the operation. The women were divided into 2 groups: the Meteneprost group and the placebo group. Complications were only found in the placebo group. However, the Meteneprost group demonstrated the advantages of chemical stability and appropriateness. It appears that prostaglandins, at least among nulliparae, increase the degree of cervical dilatation and therefore decrease the amount of further mechanical dilatation needed. In addition, a decrease in postabortal bleeding was noted among the group treated with Meteneprost. The use of Meteneprost vaginal pessaries as an effective cervical pretreatment is proven to be of value.
