Abstract
Abstract A greener approach to the faster and safer conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol is escalating in biodiesel industries and biorefineries. The bulk chemical demand for 1,3-propanediol by the textile and polymer industries as a monomer and as an additive for cosmetics and adhesives is booming, in the same way as with research strategies. This chapter describes recent developments in the biological production of 1,3-propanediol using various microorganisms and genetically engineered, nonnative 1,3-propanediol producers as well as mixed cultures. The important aspects of downstream processing and various methods and steps involved in the extraction and purification of 1,3-propanediol from the fermentation broth are also discussed.
