Abstract
SummaryEthylene is formed as a result of contact between trichloroacetic acid and the rubber serum cap liners commonly used in the acetylene reduction assay for nitrogenase activity. The amount of ethylene produced varies from one rubber liner to another, but the rate is approximately linear over an eight-day experimental period. Immediate withdrawal of a sample of the gas phase from the incubation bottle at the end of the experiment, and storage in another vessel is recommended as an alternative to the addition of any substance to terminate experiments.
