Abstract
Abstract Sixteen euthyroid patients were studied before and after the intravenous administration of a new radiological contrast medium, ioxitalamic acid, to determine the duration of effect on the protein-bound iodine and the influence on the hormonal iodine of this compound. Ioxitalamic acid exists in two forms: mixture of monoethanolamine and methylglucamine salt (Vasobrix “32”) and mixture of sodium and methylglucamine salt (Telebrix “38”). The former has an iodine concentration of 32% and the latter of 38%. Following Vasobrix “32” the PBI values return to normal ranges between the second to the seventh day. After Telebrix “38” the PBI values become normal between the fourth and the eighth day. (Hormonal iodine (HI) is not affected.) Such information is valuable for the clinician in providing a basis for estimating the waiting period required before additional PBI analyses.
