Abstract
Abstract PMR spectra of all the di-, tri-, tetra- and pentapeptides of glycine containing a single l -leucyl residue have been recorded in D2O at 60 Mc/s. Two of the corresponding hexapeptides and three peptides containing two l -leucyl residues were also studied. At least four types of glycyl methylene protons can be distinguished by their chemical shifts but only three types of α-methine leucyl protons. The protons of a glycyl residue next to the N-terminal residue have a characteristic chemical shift and are sometimes inequivalent. The results are discussed in terms of proton chemical-shift changes in an amino acid or peptide on acylation or amidation and also on variation of pH.
