Abstract
Abstract It was found that 3-methylpyridine in the presence of catalytic alkaline metals enters into a prototropic reaction with styrene or butadiene, forming 3-(3'-phenylpropyl)-pyridine and a mixture of 3-(3'-pentenyl)- and 3-(4'-pentenyl)-pyridines respectively. The structure of 3-(3′-phenylpropyl)-pyridine was proved by independent synthesis from nicotinic nitrile, and that of 3-pentenylpyridines by hydrogenation into 3-n-amylpyridine, ozonization and IR spectra. The results show a fairly high mobility of the methyl hydrogens in 3-methylpyridine, comparable with the mobility of the hydrogens in the 2- and 4-isomers.
