Abstract
Abstract Upon irradiation with γ rays, crystalline 1,4-diethynylbenzene (p-DEB), 1,2-dimethyl-4,5-di (3-acetoxy-1-propynyl)benzene (I(o)), and 1,4-dimethyl-2,5-di(3-acetoxy-1-propynyl)benzene (I(p)) give polymers having a polyene polymer backbone in the solid state. The polymer yield in I(p) is much larger than that in I(p). The ESR spectra of the irradiated crystals demonstrate that the reactivity of radicals produced in the crystals is responsible for the difference in the polymer yield. On the other hand, 1,2-dimethoxy-4,5-di(3-acetoxy-1-propynyl)benzene does not polymerize by γ irradiation in the solid state. It is suggested that the solid-state polymerization of the diethynylbenzene derivatives mainly depends on their crystal structures.
