Abstract
Penta lead diphospho glycerate, or a closely related compound, and tri lead phosphate are formed in the presence of excess phosphate ion when soluble lead salts are added to the protein free filtrates of red blood cells. Lead diphospho glycerate affects the fragility of red cells in vitro. In the presence of excess phosphate ions the effect is diminished. Intravenous injections of colloidal lead diphospho glycerate, alone and precipitated in the presence of excess phosphate, show a toxicity equal to or greater than lead acetate. The significance of these observations is discussed in relation to the mechanism of lead poisoning.
