Abstract
407Aromatic sulfonic acids and their derivatives are importantin chemical industries [2]. They have found applications inthe dying industry and in sulfa drugs as antibiotics [3].Aromatic substrates can be sulfonated with concentratedsulfuric acid, sulfur trioxide-dioxane complex, trifluoroaceticacid-sulfuric acid, or sulfur trioxide in dichloromethane [4].Bourgeois and Duffaut [5] have shown thatbis(trimethylsilyl)sulfate allows the sulfonation of anisoleunder mild conditions. It is thermally stable and soluble inmost organic solvents. Continuing their works, we studiedthe sulfonation of six natural phenolic derivatives from thymol, carvacrol, 2,5-xylenol, eugenol methyl ether, safrole, andsesamol, which have biological properties but are limited bytheir solubility in aqueous solvents.Prior to use, thymol, carvacrol, 2,5-xylenol, and sesamolwere
