Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in transformer oil react with poly(ethylene glycols) and potassium hydroxide under relatively mild conditions. Complete reaction with PEG occurs at 60-120/sup 0/C in under 2 h to produce aryl polyglycols, the products of nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The reactants and aryl polyglycol products are insoluble in transformer oil and are easily removed. Process optimization, demonstration of batch and continuous processes, and an engineering evaluation have been completed. The treated oil has been tested for its chemical and electrical properties and meets all the specifications required for reuse.
