Abstract
The reaction was studied in a flow system attached to a mass spectrometer. The pressure of the butene was in the micron range while He at a pressure of 10 mm was used as a carrier gas. Under these conditions it was found that the greater part of the excited butene‐2 is deactivated. The decomposition proceeds by two primary reactions: 2−C4H8*→CH3CHCHCH2+H,2−C4H8*→ lim rearrangementallyl+methyl. The two reactions occur roughly in the ratio 2.5:1. A rearrangement to methylcyclopropane occurs to a very minor extent if at all.
