Abstract
Co-condensation of thermally generated silicon atoms with methyl iodide (1) at liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) offers an access to dimethyldiiodosilane (2), methyltriiodosilane (3), and 1,2-dimethyl-1,1,2,2-tetraiododisilane (4). These low-temperature reactions between atomic silicon and solid methyl iodide occur spontaneously in the absence of any catalyst. The mechanism of this process and its relevance to the Rochow−Muller synthesis is discussed.
