Abstract
Abstract Thermolysis of p -tolyl benzenesulfonate and p -tolyl p -toluenesulfonate in boiling tetralin for 5 h yielded SO 2 , together with the corresponding arene, biaryl, arenesulfonic acid, 2-and/or 4-hydroxybiphenyl derivatives, phenols, p -cresol, diaryl sulfone, diaryl sulfide, o -tolylphenol, and p -tolylphenol. Similar results were obtained on thermolysis of β-naphthyl benzenesulfonate; products included naphthalene, 2-phenylnaphthalene, β-naphthol, 2,2′-dinaphthyl, 2,2′-dinaphthol, 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, and phenyl 1-naphthylsulfone. Photolysis of these arenesulfonate aryl esters afforded the biaryl, diaryl esters, phenols and 2-naphthol. A free radical mechanism is suggested to account for the observed results.
