Abstract
Abstract The electrochemical reduction of [bis(acyloxy)iodo]arenes has been investigated in acetonitrile by employing polarography, cyclic voltammetry and rotating disc electrode techniques. The reduction occurs in two well-separated steps. The first step is a two electron process which yields iodoarenes. A reaction mechanism is proposed which is consistent with the experimental data; the effect of the supporting electrolyte, the addition of protons and the role of substituents both in the phenyl ring and in the acyloxy groups have been taken into account. The electrochemical behaviour has been correlated with the chemical reactivity of [bis(acyloxy)iodo]arenes.
