Abstract
Abstract Pretreatments of female rats with oleic acid, eruric acid, ethyl oleate, ethyl erucate, triolein and trierucin intraperitoneally for 4 days (150 mg/kg/day) depress the phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES). These lipids provoke a prolongation in vivo pentobarbital-induced sleep in rats and exert inhibitory effects on certain liver microsomal enzymes; they decrease the in vitro enzymatic activities of aniline aromatic hydroxylase and p -nitroanisole O -demethylase but have no effect on the N -demethylase activity and on the amount of cytochrome P-450. These results suggest a metabolic interrelation between the RES response and the inhibition of drug metabolism and they indicate an alteration of the hepatic cells. In support of this view, these changes are associated with significant modifications in DNA, RNA and protein content of the rat liver and of the hepatic fraction containing microsomes.
