Abstract
This article aims to make a research advance review over the steroid estrogens in the environmental science and ecological toxicology research field. As is known, more and more scientific and public attention has been paid to the research of the steroid estrogens due to their potential adverse effects on the wild animals, human health and ecological environment security. In this paper,we just want to make a comprehensive review over the progress and the achievements gained in the exploration of the derivatization technologies of the hydroxyl and ketone groups, the pretreating technologies of water and the solid samples,in addition to a comment over the instrument-measuring devices of the four typical steroid estrogens, such as estrone( E1), 17-β-estradiol( E2),estriol( E3) and 17-α-ethynylestradiol( EE2). However, the most widely used silylation reagents are N-methyl-N-( trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide( MSTFA) and N,O-bis( trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide( BSTFA),in derivating the hydroxyl and ketone groups in the steroids, which results in the formation of trimethylsilyl( TMS) derivative. Besides, such catalysts as trimethylchlorosilane( TMCS) and trimethylsilyl-imidazole( TMSI),are usually added in hoping to enhance the derivatization efficiency. What is more, since the analytical procedures available for steroids in water and solid samples usually involve time-consuming steps for pretreatment sampling, including the extraction and clean-up,scientists of the field have been trying to compare and diversify the procedures of the sampling pretreatment methods, such as liquid-liquid extraction( LLE),accelerated solvent extraction( ASE),microwave-assisted extraction( MAE),solid phase extraction( SPE),solid-phase microextraction( SPME)etc. For example,SPE and SPME have popularly been used for cleaning water samples, whereas MAE and ASE are adopted for solid samples. In order to promote proper application of the aforementioned sample detection techniques we have made a detailed comparison over their advantages and disadvantages. In terms of the detection processing approaches,we have given a clear-cut comment on the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry( GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry( LC- MS)for detecting the steroids estrogens. Furthermore, this paper has also made a review and summarized the analytical methods of steroid estrogens in the environment of natural water, sewage, sediment and activated sludge in the last decades while analyzing its application environment. As is seen,we have also brought about our proposals on how to promote the future development in this way on the basis of the research achievements so far achieved.
