Abstract
Hydroxyzine hydrochloride (Vistaril) is a tranquilliser unrelated to the phenothiazines, reserpine or meprobamate. Diazepam (Valium) is a derivative of 1,4,benzodiazepine and Pentazocine (Talwin) is an analgesic of the weak narcotic-antagonist type. Both diazepam and hydroxyzine are used for pre-operative sedation and since their effect on respiration has not been investigated fully we decided to do a crossover study to define precisely the relative potency of hydroxyzine in comparison with diazepam. Pentazocine is a known potent respiratory depressant and was included as a control.
