Abstract
Abstract Zirconium being a peculiar element, has been gaining meticulous attention in both fundamental and application-based research, which varies from industrial applications to the treatment process. Its utilization in water treatment especially in the adsorption process, has been multitudinously explored because of its distinct features. Therefore, the present study provides a comprehensive overview of different properties of zirconium and zirconium-based sorbents, their synthesis routes, performance and regeneration capabilities. Zirconium-based adsorbents have been used in a gamut of forms, each with peculiar characteristics and abilities. Their systematic designing determines their morphological, textural and chemical properties, which plays a crucial role in their performance. Different synthesis routes have been discovered for Zr-based adsorbents, enhancing their surface chemistry, functionalities and morphologies. These adsorbents are extensively explored for various inorganic pollutants decontamination via specific physical and chemical adsorption mechanism but, their application for organic pollutants has been restricted to numbers. Besides these, zirconium-based adsorbents show competent desorption-regeneration capacity that advocates its use as an adsorbent in terms of the adsorbents' cost. Therefore, these adsorbents were found to be highly effective and can be diversely modified based on the targeted pollutants. Also, their different synthesis routes, non-toxicity and reusability, make them efficient and versatile sorbent with environmental suitability, thus, can further be explored more for contaminant’s removal.
