Abstract
The rhodium(II) salen derivative [N,N‘-ethylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylaldiminato)]rhodium(II) is a dimer, [(ttbs)Rh]2 (1), in the solid state and in tetrahydrofuran solution (250−380K) but is extensively dissociated into the paramagnetic monomer, (ttbs)RhII (2), in benzene and toluene above 280 K. 1H NMR shift and lifetime measurements are used in determining thermodynamic and activation parameters for dissociation of 1 into 2 in toluene (ΔH1° = 13.3 ± 0.5 kcal mol-1, ΔS1° = 26.5 ± 1.4 cal K-1 mol-1; ΔH1‡ = 16 ± 1 kcal mol-1, ΔS1‡ = 22 ± 5 cal K-1 mol-1).
