Abstract
Abstract This expedition relates to novel and never studied tridentate ligand with ONO donor system; synthesized from less explored 1-amino-9H-fluoren-9-ol and salicylaldehyde and its coordination compounds of some first row transition metals. Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes of synthesized ligand were prepared, which are characterized by IR, 1H NMR, GC–MS, TGA, electronic spectra and analytical data. The stoichiometry of the metal complexes is found to be 1: 2 (metal: ligand) with the general formula [M(L)2], where L = singly deprotonated ligand and the synthesized metal (II) complexes exhibit octahedral geometry. Inhibition of cancer cell growth has been confirmed by DNA fragmentation studies. Ligand and its metal complexes show better anticancer activity towards K562 (Leukemia) cells with morphological abnormalities in treated cells when compared with the standard drug Paclitaxel. The activity of the complexes is enhanced compared to the free ligand which is evident from their lower IC50 values.
