Abstract
Abstract 3-Hydroxybenzoic acid (3HBA) was electrochemically oxidized on a platinum (Pt) and platinum gilded (Pt/Au) electrode surface and further modified with 4-aminodibenzo-18-crown-6 (4ADB18C6). ATR FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopic techniques were employed to confirm the covalent immobilization of 4ADB18C6 on the 3HBA oxidation product formed on the metallic surface. Conformational changes to the oxyethylene linkage of the crown ether moiety were evident. The affinity between immobilized 4ADB18C6 and phenylpropanolamine was demonstrated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopic detection in i) phosphate-buffered saline in the concentration range 9.9 × 10−6–8.00 × 10−5 M (Sr = 0.07–0.11), ii) artificial urine and the pharmaceutical Propalin, which contain 1.0 × 10−5 M and 26.0 × 10−3 M (Sr = 0.11), respectively. The immobilization of the receptor from the crown ether family could be useful for the development of sensor systems that are selective towards amino substances of forensic interest.
