Abstract
Summary Synthetic (±)-strigol was separated into its enantiomers by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography on microcrystalline cellulose triacetate. (+)-Strigol, identical with the natural compound isolated from cotton, induced germination of seeds of the parasitic flowering plants Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze and Orobanche aegyptiaca Pers. at concentrations down to 10− 11 M. The (−)-enantiomer was much less active, whereas for seeds of Alectra vogelii Benth, (−)-strigol was more active than (+)-strigol.
