Abstract
Abstract Scanning Tunneling Microscopy has been used to study polycrystalline aluminum in sodium hydroxide solution. The effect of oxidation and reduction processes on the electrode surface has been studied in-situ. The initiation of oxide formation appears to start in the form of patches or clusters. In the study of the oxide formation by STM, a passive to active region was detected at −1.05 V vs. SHE in 0.01 M NaOH.
