Abstract
Abstract Mixed complexes of 9-methoxyanthracene with a broad range of protic solvents cooled in a supersonic free jet were studied by laser induced fluorescence techniques. The origin of the S 0 S 1 transition is in most cases blue shifted with respect to the bare molecule origin and this blue shift has been taken as the signature of a specific solute—solvent interaction due to a hydrogen bond between the oxygen atom of the methoxy group and the alcohol OH. When compared with the gas phase acidity, this microscopic solvent shift exhibits the same reversed order as observed in solution. The fluorescence lifetimes of the complexes are shortened with respect to the bare chromophore and vary irregularly from one system to another. This result shows that the competitive intersystem crossing S 1 T n is highly dependent on energy matching between the coupled states.
