Abstract
Abstract IR and Raman spectra of 3,6-dithiaoctane-1,8-diol in the solid, melt and solution were studied. The structure of the molecule is discussed on the basis of the spectral data and the results of the normal coordinate analysis for eight conformers due to rotation around the central CC bond. In crystal the structure with a trans conformation of the central moiety and with a relatively strong intermolecular OH ··· O hydrogen bond exists. In the liquid phase, the molecule has a gauche conformation with respect to the central CC bond with an intramolecular hydrogen bond, which seems most likely to be of the OH ··· S type. The ν CS frequency region (600–800 cm −1 ) is a sensitive indicator for determining of the conformation towards the central CC bond.
