Abstract
Abstract Dicloxacillin sodium (DXS) is a β-Lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class. It is used to treat infections caused by susceptible (non-resistant) gram-positive bacteria. β-producing organisms such asStaphylococcus aureus, are resistant to most penicillins, however the DXS is active. The activity is facilitated by the presence of the isoxazolyl group on the side chain of the penicillin nucleus since they are relatively intolerant of side-chain steric hindrance. Paragard t 380a has active ingredients of copper which is used mostly for birth control. The present study investigates the complex formation of DXSwith copper acetate in 2:1 molar ratio and its further reaction with ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Absorption spectral studies indicate the formation of a green coloured complex, I. The complex is further characterized by IR and mass. The metal is expected to coordinate with the COO- group of the DXS and the nitrogen of the β-lactum based on the infrared spectral data. The in situ addition of ascorbic acid in 1:1 molar ratio yields a dark green solution with significant changes in the absorption spectrum. The compound on further addition of ascorbic acid upto 1:3 molar finally yields a new green coloured complex, II. The complex II is also characterized and a mechanism for the formation of the complex was delineated based on the spectro-analytical techniques.
