Abstract
Abstract Time-dependent picosecond laser spectroscopy and quantum mechanical calculations have been used to clarify the first excited singlet state acid dissociation of the bifunctional compound 1,3-naphthalenediol. Excited state rate constants are derived which reproduce the time-dependent and steady state spectroscopic results. It is shown that comparison of the emission behaviour of the molecular species of this compound with that of its monofunctional analogues, 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, is not straightforward. These results are tentatively interpreted to indicate that structure-reactivity relationships in the excited state do not hold as well as in the ground state.
