Abstract
Stay-at-home mothers care for children in the home, generally without working for pay outside the home. Sociologists view stay-at-home motherhood, and motherhood in general, as a social construction, rather than as a biological or deterministic role. The number of stay-at-home mothers has fluctuated throughout the decades, reflecting changes in the economy, women's rights, women's educational attainment, and cultural attitudes. Keywords: children; family; family structure; female roles; gender roles; marriage; motherhood; parenting; sociology of family; women and families
