Abstract
Gas-phase electron diffraction data obtained at 22-23 o C, together with ab initio calculations, have been used to determine the structure and conformational composition of methyl dichloroacetate (HCl 2 C-C-(=O)-O-CH 3 ). Two conformers have been identified, 53 (13)% of a syn form with a H-C-C=O torsion angle of O 1 =0 o and 47 (13)% of a gauche form with O 1 =152 (5) o . For both conformers the O=C-O-CH 3 torsional angle was found to be O 2 =0 o
