Abstract
Dirubidium ethylenediaminetetra-acetate dihydrate, Rb2H2Y. 2H20 (Y = C10H1208N2), crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21 with cell dimensions a= 12.52, b = 8.11, c= 7.62 A, fl= 94.5 °, Z= 2. The structure was solved by the heavy atom and refined by least-squares techniques. The final R index is 0.092. The structure is an ionic-type one; the cohesion of the crystal is due to hydrogen bonding between molecular ions H2Y zand the water molecules. It is shown that the H2Y 2species belong to a zwitterion structure with the protonated N atoms, which are involved in trifurcated hydrogen bonds. The results are compared with those obtained from the dipotassium salt, in which the H2Y 2ion exists with a very different conformation.
