Abstract
Abstract The molecular structure of methylene cyclobutane has been studied by combined analysis of electron diffraction and spectroscopic data in the vapour phase. The molecule was found to undergo large-amplitude ring-puckering motion with the barrier at the planar form. The minima are determined to be 21.6(23)° out of planarity. The results for some of the more important bond lengths( r g ) and valence angles (∠ α ) are: r g (CH)=1.101(3) A, r g (CC)=1.331(2) A, r g (CC)= 1.524(4) A, r g (CC) = 1.557(3) A, ∠HCH av = 106(2)° and [∠C 4 C 1 C 2 ] 0 = 92.0(3)°.
