Abstract
PRELOG1 has proposed the structure (I) for sempervirine, the reddish-brown alkaloid of Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina jasmine), from which he obtained yobyrine (II) by treatment with selenium at 295–300° and “tetrahydroyobyrine” (III) by boiling in xylene with Raney nickel. We are indebted to Dr. G. A. Swan for the information, in advance of publication, that he has synthesized a base having the constitution (I) which is not identical with the alkaloid; unlike sempervirine and like the structurally related dihydroberberine, it can be dehydrogenated to a quaternary iodide by iodine in the presence of sodium acetate.
