Abstract
Abstract The molecular structure of t-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (ButMe2SiCl) in the gas phase has been determined by electron diffraction. The principal parameters (ra) are: r(SiC) = 187.5(1) pm, r(CC) = 153.9(2) pm, r(SiCl) = 208.6(2) pm, ∠ClSiC(Bu) = 106.3(11)°, ∠C(Me)SiC(Me) = 111.1(26)° and ∠CCC = 109.2(3)°. The conformation adopted is fully staggered. The only apparent steric effect of the t-butyl group is a small tilt of the threefold axis of the group [1.6(17)°] away from the Si-methyl groups.
