Abstract
Abstract Trimethylamine oxide dihydrate, (CH 3 ) 3 NO·2H 2 O, crystallizes in space group Pbca with a =9.087(2), b =10.990(3), c =12.778(7) A, and Z =8. The structure has been refined to R =0.051 for 1502 observed Mo K α reflections. Hydrogen bonds link the water molecules and oxygen atoms of the N -oxide groups into a puckered layer composed of edge-sharing eight-membered rings. The trimethylamine moieties, which protrude on both sides of each puckered layer, constitute hydrophogic regions separating the hydrophilic layers in the crystal packing.
