Abstract
Abstract 4-Thiomethyl-N-methylphenylcarbamate was prepared, and Huckel Molecular Orbita(HMO) calculations were carried out for both the ground state and its excited state phenoxy radical. Pi-bond orders and charge densities obtained from the HMO calculations were successfully used to predict the major photodegradation products of the photolysis of this compound in ethanol. Photodegradation products were characterized to be 4-thiomethylphenol and 3-N-methylamide-4-hydroxythioanisole. Also, the rate of photodegradation of the carbamate was determined to be first order, with an average half-life ( t 1 2 ) of 8.3 hours.
