Abstract
The structure of methyl (R(+)-α-methylbenzylamine)bis(dimethylglyoximato)cobalt(III) benzene solvate has been determined by X-ray crystal analysis. The crystal is orthorhombic; space group, P212121; Z=4 with a=14.074(1), b=14.390(1), and c=12.202(1) A. The structure was deduced by the heavy-atom method and refined by the block-diagonal least-squares method to a final R value of 0.063 for 1413 observed reflections. The symmetry of the bis(dimethylglyoximato)cobalt moiety has been lowered from D2h to C2h as a result of the steric repulsion from optically active amine. It is proposed that this deformation is a factor inducing the asymmetry in the hydrogenation catalyzed by the complex of bis(dimethylglyoximato)cobalt and the active amine.
