Abstract
Dialdehyde starch has been reacted with urea, guanidine and dicyandiamide respectively in various conditions. It has been found that one to three molecules of urea are combined with four aldehyde groups of two structural units of dialdehyde starch, if 98% and 50% methanol solutions is used as a solvent and sulfuric acid as a catalyzer. The product of the reaction of two to three hours at 65°C has not found to colorize and swell.Guanidine has not been found to react with dialdehyde starch so much.Dicyandiamide has been found to react with dialdehyde starch in the similar condition, and one to two molecules of dicyandiamide combine to ten structural units of dialdehyde starch. The reaction products are hoped for many interesting applications in paper industry.
