Abstract
The influence of sodium azide on the growth of selected strains of bacteria has been reported (Lichstein and Soule, 1944a), as well as the inhibiting action of the compound on the catalase activity of bacteria (Lichstein and Soule, 1944b). The results'obtained suggested the possibility that the chemical interfered with aerobic respiration. A quantitative study of the gas exchange by bacteria growing on media containing sodium azide was thus suggested.
