Abstract
SUMMARY The effect of 3,5-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (3,5-D) in reducing the shoot growth of tomoato plants has been investigated and evidence is presented which suggests that the inhibition of shoot growth which occurs is not the result of a competitive antagonism between 3,5-D and endogenous auxin or gibberellins. A reinvestigation of the effect of 3,5-D on certain auxin-induced responses failed to reveal evidence which would support the previous classification of 3,5-D as an ‘anti-auxin’.
