Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the antimicrobial test methods and their effects of 1,4-benzoquinone.METHODS Plating method, Oxford Cup method, fumigation method and coating method of 1,4-benzoquinone are used in each species of bacteria, yeasts and molds, to determine their antimicrobial activity. And the dilute-platemethod is used in 6 species of bacteria, yeasts and molds, to detect the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration of 1,4-benzoquinone on each species.RESULTS In the 4 kind of methods, 1,4-benzoquinone may inhibit all the microbe, among them, plating method is the best method, while the coating method is less effective than the others. The different microbe are totally inhibited by 125, 250 or 500mg·L -1 1,4-benzoquinone.CONCLUSION Plating method needs more antimicrobial agent, it is suitable for detecting Minimal Inhibitory Concentration, the Oxford Cup method is suitable for using less antimicrobial agent in antimicrobial test, the fumigation method is suitable for testing antimicrobial activity using the antimicrobial agent extracted by volatile solvent. 1,4-benzoquinone is a kind of broad spectrum antimicrobial agent.
