Abstract
A sodium polyaspartate is synthesized in laboratory with L aspartic acid as starting material and structurally identified by H 1 NMR and C 13 NMR data. It is a mixture of α and β isomers(23.97/76.03) with M w=4 000. Some scale inhibition properties are experimentally investigated. It is shown that the inhibiting rate of this polyaspartate preparate for CaCO 3 is a little higher, its dispersing capacity for Fe 2+ ions is much better and its stabilizing capacity for Zn(OH) 2 is a little worse than that of polymaleic and polyacrylic acids. Polyaspartate might be used as a good scale inhibitor in cooling water treatments.
