Abstract
A synthesis method of isovanillin was introduced.First,via bromination reaction,1-Methoxy-4-methylbenzene was turned to 3-Methyl-4-bromoanisole with yield of 91.2%;the product then reacted with potassium hydroxide and copper powder catalyst to prepare for 2-methoxy-5-methylphenol with yield of 75.3%;the last step was via oxidation by pure oxygen and cobaltous acetate as catalyst,copper acetate as catalyst promoter.Reaction temperature and catalysts amount were optimized.The yield of final products reached to 48.7%.The products were identified by infrared structure.The results indicated the synthesis route was feasible,simple with higher yield and less industry waste.So it is superior to the current method.But the intermediate product 3-Bromo-p-anisaldehyde went easily to Cannizzaro reaction in hydrolysis with many by products which affected the final yields.Further research was needed to solve the above problem.
