Abstract
1. In the reaction of 2-methyl- and 2-ethyl-3-chlorotetrahydrofurans with phosphorus tribromide the corresponding l,4-dibromo-3-chloroalkanes were formed in 25–30% yield. 2. The reaction of 2-methyl- and 2-ethyl-3-chlorotetrahydrofurans with silicon tetrachloride led, on the one hand, to 1,3,4-trichloroalkanes and, on the other, to orthosilicic esters, the hydrolysis of which gave the corresponding dichloroalkanols (yield 40–60%). 3. The reaction of 2-alkyl-3-chlorotetrahydrofurans with active halogen-containing agents can serve as a convenient method for the synthesis of 1,3,4-trihaloalkanes.
