Abstract
3-Methyl-2-cyclopenten-2-ol-1-one (III) has been reported to be one of the important constituents of coffee aroma1) and maple fiavor2), and the compound has been utilized as the starting material in the syntbesis of dihydrojasmone3). Besides being available from natural sources, a variety of methods for the preparation of the compound III have been reported in the literature4). In this paper, we wish te report a fimple method for the synthesis of 3methyl-2-cyclopenten-2-ol-1-one (III). Starting with diethyl glutarate and diethyl oxalate, the route proceeds as outlined in Fig.-1. The ctaisen condensation of diethyl glutarate and diethyl oxalate has been reported to give 3, 5dicarbethoxycyclopentane-1, 2-dione (I) in 50~70
