Abstract
bromo-4'-hydroxybiphenyl is a key intermediate to synthesize liquid crystal display materials. The synthesis of 4-bromo-4'-hydroxybiphenyl was studied with 4-hydroxybi- phenyl as material by bromation after esterification to protect the hydroxyl. It is shown that the yield is lower in acetic anhydride or acetic acid with iodine or ferric powder as catalysts, but the yield is higher in trifluoroacetic anhydride. The study results indicate that under the catalysis of ferric chloride, trifluoroacetohypobromous anhydride synthesized by trifluoroace- tic anhydride and bromine is the better agent to synthesize 4-bromo-4'-hydroxybiphenyl.
